Islamic Art Exhibition

The Islamic Art Exhibition celebrates the 400th year of the establishment of the study of Oriental Languages and Cuture at the university of Leiden –the oldest in Europe- with a showcase of its impressive collection of manuscripts and artwork gathered from centuries of foreign relations and cultural exchange between the Netherlands, the Arab world and the Ottoman Empire.

 

The exhibition displays highlights from 5 collections:

 

-          The Special Collections of Leiden University

-          Qur’ān Calligraphy

-          Mecca the Blessed and Medina the Radiant

-          The Art of Science

-          Drawing for Pleasure

-          A World of Ornament

 

Additionally, the exhibition will feature the following talks and workshops by key speakers and experts from the Netherlands and Lebanon:

 

Thursday 16 October 2014

3 pm – 4.30 pm: Lecture Karin Scheper, Dutch researcher from the University of Leiden on “Understanding Islamic bookbinding techniques:  Western misperceptions and forgotten methods”. (max. 100 pp)

 

5.30 pm – 7.00 pm: Lecture Huda Smitshuijzen-Abifares, Arabic typographer and founder of the Khatt Foundation, on “The Dutch-Arab collaboration in the development of Arabic Typography from the 17thC to the present” 5.30 pm – 6.00 pm followed by a panel discussion – 7.00 pm (max. 100 pp)

 

Friday 17 October 2014

12 pm – 2 pm: Workshop Karin Scheper on the “The Islamic bookbinding tradition: developments in materials and techniques”. (max. 20 pp)

3 pm – 6 pm: Workshop Huda Smitshuijzen-Abifares on the design of symbols and messages that challenge media perspectives of the Arab world, with the focus on Lebanon from 3 pm – 6 pm. (max. 20 pp)
